Winter Festival of Lights – November 4, 2007 – January 8, 2008

The Winter Festival of Lights transforms Niagara Falls in the winter months into a spectacular display of light and imagination for the last 75 years. The Tradition continues beginning in November as 3 million LED lights brighten the night and create a magical atmosphere in Queen Victoria Park directly across from the Brock Plaza.

Displays are lit from 5:00pm – 12:00am nightly.

Each night, 365 days a year Niagara Falls are bathed in a rainbow of colours. During summer months the Falls are lit up from 9pm to midnight. Start time varies throughout the year, but begin at nightfall.

Niagara Ice Wine Festival - January 18-27, 2008

A Celebration of Niagara's Finest, award winning Ice Wines. The festival includes Black Tie Gala dinners hosted at Sheraton on the Falls, educational seminars, ornate Ice Bars, and outdoor Ice wine tasting. Niagara's Ice Wine festival is a must see, and has been included at one of the top 100 events in North America by the America Bus Association.

Falls View Casino Marathon – October 28, 2007

The Brock Plaza is once again a proud sponsor of the only marathon in the world that starts in one country and finishes in another. Beginning in Buffalo, NY and finishing in Niagara Falls, Ontario the Casino Marathon consists of: Half-Marathon Run, Half-Marathon Walk, 10km Run, 5km Run.

Niagara Falls Facts

  1. The word "Niagara" was derived from the Iroquois Indian word "Onguiaahra" meaning "the strait"
  2. Niagara Falls is 12, 000 years old
  3. Niagara Falls are the second largest falls in the world next to Victoria Falls in South Africa. What makes Niagara Falls spectacular is the combination of volume and height.
  4. 2800 cubic meters of water flows over the edge of the Falls per second during the summer peak, and falls at a speed of 65 km/hr.
  5. The sound of the Falls has been described as thunder, and is caused by air bubbles breaking as they are slammed up and out of the water.
  6. The plunge pool beneath the falls is 35m(100 feet) deep.
  7. It is estimated that Niagara Falls erodes at the rate of 1foot per year.
  8. The Niagara generating stations supply one quarter of all power used in New York State and Ontario.
  9. All the water flows from 4 Great Lakes (Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie) north through the Niagara River into Lake Ontario and through the St. Lawrence River to the Atlantic Ocean.
  10. As one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Niagara Falls attracts more than 12 million visitors a year.

Travel Documentation

As of January 23, 2007 all citizens of Canada, United States and Mexico now require a passport to travel through North America by air. This change in document requirements is the result of the 9/11 commission recommendations. Changes have been introduced in two phases. Phase one involves all travel by air, phase two is a separate proposed rule addressing travel by land or sea border crossings and will be announced at a later date. Tax Refunds

The Government of Canada has announced the intention of eliminating the Goods and Service Tax Rebate, and announced the introduction of the Foreign Convention and Tour Incentive program.

As of March 31, 2007 visitors to Canada who purchase goods and export them, will no longer be entitled to a rebate of the GST paid.

The Foreign Convention and Tour Incentive program offers rebate to certain property and services used in the course of holding a foreign convention in Canada.

Currency Exchange

While the hotels will accept both Canadian and American currency, the best method of payment when using US dollars is by credit card as the exchange is handled by the credit card company and based on the exchange rate of the day.

Please be aware that exchange rates may vary within the Tourist district when paying by cash with American currency.

The Legal age for gambling and drinking in Ontario is 19 years old.
